Marylin Kanee has worked in the field of workplace human rights and equity for 20 years, preceded by work in the areas of immigrant services, child development and community organizing. She was a community college faculty for 10 years teaching social service work and instructional skills for faculty. Since 2000, she has been the Director of Human Rights & Health Equity at Mount Sinai Hospital, which focuses on organizational change through addressing harassment and discrimination complaints, providing training on human rights and related issues, and developing policies to ensure equity in the hospital for patients, visitors and workers.  The Human Rights & Health Equity Office also leads the Measuring Health Equity project to assist 17 TC LHIN hospitals and Community Health Centres to collect a consistent set of patient demographic data.  Mount Sinai has been received the Best Diversity Employer award for the past 5 years.

Marylin’s training and background is in social work specializing in education and training. As an educator, she has taught community college; trained thousands of workplace employees in human rights and equity; and has led workshops on topics including conflict resolution, harassment and violence prevention, violence against women, fair employment practices, being an ally, accommodation and health equity.  She has training and extensive experience in mediation and investigations of workplace discrimination, harassment and violence.

As MSH’s Director of Human Rights & Health Equity, Marylin led the first workforce census at a Canadian hospital, a research study of the experience of marginalized groups of employees in the hospital work environment, a project to identify “Made in Sinai” competencies for staff working with diverse communities and the Are you an ALLY campaign. She chaired the Tri-Hospital + TPH research study on Patient Demographic Data Collection. She works with many dedicated and skilled colleagues and leaders who work hard to achieve equity and health equity for all.
